then he asked me what I did

**************

Tell him that your employment informattion is subject to the Privacy Act and as such is between you and the IRS, and perhaps the Census Bureau which has very stringent safegurands against disclosing such personal data. If he’s not authorized to collect data for either agency he has no valid reason to ask you.

He may continue harassing you but keep asking what authority he has to collect such information. Then tell him you will be contacting your senator in Washington as soon as you get home. He’ll cease this line of questioning immediately because a letter will be sent from the senator to the congressional liason office in CBP causing the guard big time problems.

I always thought that people crossing an international border (the US border at least) had very few rights regarding "privacy".But even if I'm wrong on that, which you're clearly suggesting (are you a lawyer by any chance?), I was in a hurry and I strongly suspect that if I had refused to answer he would have sent me to "secondary" and thus detain me for a couple of hours (as Canadian border guards did to me about 10 years ago).

Oh well...live and learn.

That will get your ass hauled into secondary so fast your head will spin. Whether or not you are doing something wrong, they will detain you and run you through the grinder like you’ve never seen in your life.

Just ask Sydney Watson:
