Maybe. But a fire needs fuel. Eliminate the fuel, no fire. Fuel slopped around a carrier and not cleaned up prior to hot work in the area? Inexcusable.

Interesting. Most documentaries omit the problematic voyage.
Monty Python eating the minstrels came to mind with the maintenance ship(?).
Floating fuel-air bombs regarding coal dust was a new one.
Always think of the WWII IJN carrier that suffered a torpedo hit that ruptured an avgas system, and eventually somebody turned on the ventilation system that spread the fumes thorough out the rest of the ship, with catastrophic results at the first opportunistic spark or flame.
