I consider myself a minimalist. Too much stuff gives me all kinds of stress, from ecological to financial. I’m a big believer in experiential gifts and spending time (together), not wads of money.
But I’m buying my kids presents this year.
They're tangible, need to be unwrapped and aren't just experiences or vouchers. And I’m feeling good about it. It’s not out of guilt or peer pressure, or any of those other powerful emotions. There is a method to my consumerism.
First of all, when I say I’m buying my kids presents, I don’t mean a pile of plastic, electronics or toys. I am not anti-toy — in the past I have purchased Lego sets. Pored over the Maplelea Doll catalogue. Become well-versed in BeyBlades and My Little Pony. But this year, my kids seem to have enough of those items. They didn’t even appear on wish lists. And so I’ve changed my approach.
So for Christmas I decided to gift my kids items that they need and that appeal to their sense of adventure: excellent day packs, perfect for carrying essentials whether exploring a national park or a city.
I also researched to find ones made by truly ethical companies that employ fair trade practices and that help the workers, not risk their safety. I even found neat packs that are made from the remnants of other products. The rainbow pattern for each is individual and based on the preferences of the worker, not a blueprint. My kids and I will talk about the unique and creative process behind these bags, and how it is important to support ethical and sustainable manufacturers with our all-important buying power.

Actually, once you get past the hippy-dippy crap, she has very sound and substantial principles for gifts — backpacks with essentials for outdoor activities, hikes, swimming, and exploration plus books to nurture a love of reading.
Our gifts to our kids were often along the same lines — in fact, they still are. We are doing family snowshoeing at Christmas. I bought our oldest daughter (now 33) and boyfriend a couple of great books about Western National Parks. They love hiking and backpacking. I got my daughter a great ball cap to commemorate her backpacking of the entire length of the John Muir Trail in the Sierras.
Our other two kids, both younger, have similar interests. Our time taking them outdoors and boating, camping, serious hiking, biking, horseback riding, etc instilled a love of the outdoors in them.
Kudos to the mom who wrote this article. She’s on the right track with her kids and instilling a love of country in them, too(she’s a “nationalist”).

She sounds just like my step daughter in law. She “gifted” them. Puh-LEAZE... The pretentious acts of progressive robots. BTW: I recently received a photo of them (mom and two daughters) attending some kind of women’s rally in Seattle. They looked so precious in their pink pu$$y hats. NOT. They looked ridiculous. Pink pu$$y hats and pearl necklaces. WTH is THAT about??!

as a kid, i always considered it a total gyp to get “presents” that were stuff that was bought for us on a daily basis anyway ... the WORST of those kinds of “presents” were always tube socks ...

One of the fun things about Christmas is the loads of wrapping paper the cats play in. The loon has no idea the fun it can be.
