"Brown highlighted what he feels are low pensions for older retired players. For those who retired before 1993, the rate is about $2,500 a month for a player who spent seven years in the league. Brown called it shockingly, immorally, low.

Jim Brown had an anti-gang program that worked in some areas. He negotiated peace between crips and bloods that i think lasted over a year in LA. Two stories:
Pryor was at a bar with JB. He said JB was the toughest man he ever knew. He threw a detective over a second story balcony for disrupting him. A guy walks up to Brown and says, I’m gonna whip your ass. Brown puts his drink down and starts outside saying, I guess that’s an ass whipping I’m gonna have to take. The guy disappeared.
JB and associates had a proposal before Grant HS officials in Sacramento a high gang campus. The school board hmm and hawed and then brown walked out with his associates. brown told a Sac Bee reporter, i guess politics are more important than kids dying at Grant HS. Went strait to the airport and caught the last flight back to LA
JB has cred. He ran over guys rather than run out of bounds. He almost walked din picture because he and Rachel Welch had a love scenes. Welch said ion he walked, she would too. First interracial with so much skin.
He supports trumps basically “economics for all people and not bullshit.”
I was Cleveland fan as boy and when he retired early, i almost cried. Whatever you say or think about Brown, he is a man’s man and lives life as he chooses.
‘If onions make you tear up’..yeh
Most of us work what? 35 45 years and get what?
The average monthly Social Security payment for retirees was $1,471 in June 2019.
But many retirees receive over $2,000 per month from the Social Security Administration.
Don’t cry for these guys...
They don't.
There are a number of young men, disproportionately black, who think they will get rich is professional sports. They spend their high school and college years focused on sports, instead of actually getting an education.
Most are not picked for pro teams. Of the ones who are picked, most don't get retained for more than a few years.
So there they are, in their 20's, no education, no marketable skills, and the money soon runs out. There is no cure for being stupid.
If anybody in the league actually cared about them, then they would convince the new players to put the bulk of their salaries into an investment account, and only touch the earnings, and never the principle. But they don't.
You get a pension even if you are only active on a roster for eight games. I wonder though when it starts?
FYI-it looks like the pension begins at age 55
“They spend their high school and college years focused on sports, instead of actually getting an education.”
And that is the root of the problem.
Once the sports machine spits them out, they are not prepared to support themselves.
“Stupid is as stupid does, sir”. F. Gump.
Because they don’t want to grow up.
$2500 for 7 years.
I got $1700 for 40 years.
The NFL never was “must see TV” and the sport will eventually fade into obscurity. Here in Texas, even the once ubiquitous obsession with high school and college ball is noticeably beginning to fray at the seems.
I’m witchoo.
The NFL is supremely wealthy now, and can afford to address the needs of its former players in a reasonable way.
Good points, well taken.
Retired military.. 25+ years... Get a little more than $2500 a month, but knew that was the deal going in... Still, the $$$ the League brings in is because of those earlier players... The League should sweeten the pot... Good PR and a rounding error on their books...
Great post.
Jim Brown deserves the great respect he has earned, in sports and in life.
He walked away from football at the peak of his career, tried a completely different, highly competitive career (movie acting) — and was very successful at that also.
Did a lot on gang-related issues in California.
Thanx He still makes it to DC now and then and occasional games. I think he’s now wheel-chair bound.
Thank You
Really? Jim Brown in wheel chair? Argh!
Well... Gale Sayers has dementia, so I guess Father Time remains undefeated.
I was 10 the first time I saw him play. I’m 73 now. He must be in his late 80s.

$2500 a month is about what I get after 35 years in various prof/mgt. positions at the same company.
I know that the Cowboys provide financial classes for all new players to advise them on investing/saving. Perhaps all NFL teams do, also.
