Winner take all primaries were a major contributing factor. Those no longer exist in the Democratic primaries.
However, Democratic voters are easily led (brainwashed) by mass media coverage, so if the elites "pick" the chosen one the Democratic voters will fall in line.
It is auction time. Who is willing to be the biggest slave for his masters?
In an auction gotta go with Quid Pro Joe (if he survives).
But the other three candidates can be bought.

The Dems had a brokered convention in 2016.
It was a little different in that all the brokering was before the convention.
