As many as 20 people may be injured after White Island erupted on Monday afternoon.
The volcanic eruption began at around 2:15pm on Monday.
A group of people believed to be tourists were on the island at the time. St John has confirmed to Newstalk ZB that they have reports of up to 20 injured in the eruption.

Hope they are all OK . Iii is rather remote.
“A GeoNet agency camera appeared to capture a group of tourists walking through the volcano’s crater at 2:10pm - minutes before the eruption.
“The camera - which takes a new still image every ten minutes - did not take another and is believed to have been destroyed in the blast.”

Some have been rescued by boat. Helicopters there all covered in ash.
The you-tube coverage is scary and sad.
Here is some film from a boat en route to the island:

Looks bad.
I think Mr. Jimmy Buffets full statement is the definitive word on human/volcano interaction:
Chorus:
Now I don’t know
I don’t know
I don’t know where I’m a gonna go
When the volcano blow
Chorus:
Let me say now I don’t know
I don’t know
I don’t know where I’m a gonna go
When the volcano blow
Ground she’s movin’ under me
Tidal waves out on the sea
Sulphur smoke up in the sky
Pretty soon we learn to fly
Chorus:
Let me hear ya now I don’t know
I don’t know
I don’t know where I’m a gonna go
When the volcano blow
Now my girl quickly say to me
Mon you better watch your feet
Lava come down soft and hot
You better lava me now or lava me not
Chorus:
Let me say now I don’t know
I don’t know
I don’t know where I’m a gonna go
When the volcano blow
— Spoken: “Mr Utley...”
No time to count what I’m worth
‘Cause I just left the planet earth
Where I go I hope there’s rum
Not to worry mon soon come
Chorus:
Now I don’t know
I don’t know
I don’t know where I’m a gonna go
When the volcano blow
Chorus:
One more now I don’t know (ah he don’t know)
I don’t know (he don’t know, mon)
I don’t know where I’m a gonna go
When the volcano blow
But I don’t want to land in New York City
Don’t want to land in Mexico (no no no)
Don’t want to land on no Three Mile Island
Don’t want to see my skin aglow (no no no)
Don’t want to land in Commanche Sky park
Or in Nashville, Tennessee (no no no)
Don’t want to land in no San Juan airport
Or the Yukon Territory (no no no)
Don’t want to land no San Diego
Don’t want to land in no Buzzards Bay (no no no)
Don’t want to land on no Ayotollah
I got nothing more to say
Chorus:
I don’t know
I don’t know
I don’t know where I’m a gonna go
When the volcano blow
Chorus:
Just a one more, I don’t know (he don’t know)
I don’t know (I don’t know, man)
I don’t know where I’m a gonna go
When the volcano blow

Tried to lift them out at the last minute? Gutsy.
Spectacular sight of the earth releasing a huge amount of heat and “pollution”. Yet it is happening every day mostly in deep oceans in the form of underwater large and small volcanoes and innumerable “smokers”. The relative activity of earths release of the enormous store of core energy may be the prime cause of glacier shrinkage or growth as well as variants in ambient surface temperatures. So far scientists have no good “gauge” to measure the rate or volume of earth core energy release.
I don’t know where I’m a-gonna go when de volcano blow.
Update: one confirmed dead.

Heat is constantly being produced by the little bit of radioactivity in the earth.
I suspect that 90% molten is a significant exaggeration.
