Having spent half of a year experiencing firsthand the labyrinthine bowels of an Amazon Fulfillment Center, I must ask:
What are all the complaints about?
Employment at Amazon was not perfect. Then again, no job will be. But for those wanting to establish themselves with a job history or get back into the routine of full-time employment, being at Amazon isnt the torturous ordeal some have described. Coming off a years sabbatical and being a technical writer before that, work at an Amazon facility was a shining opportunity to regain some lost footing.
In retrospect, I cant but be thankful for that. It wasnt just the financial boon, but also the chance to persevere that elicited and encouraged growth and strength in both physical and mental senses.

The handful of complaints are sucked up by the echo chamber and broadcast far and wide.
Anyway, has anyone here read Orwell’s “Down and out on Paris and London”? Great book about subsistence labor in the 1920s.
Interesting...considering all the pissing and moaning we hear about working at Amazon.
LOL! Or NOT being allowed to take a pee break. Of course, nearly nobody has the same experience as someone else.
We have an entire generation of little p*$$ies and whiners now.
Wheres my double chocolate latte they promised me on my break... (snivel)
Interesting read. I’ve always been skeptical of the complaints about Amazon as a workplace. The impression I get from the article is about what I’d expect, which is that it’s demanding but decent.
DHgate is better than Amazon.
Yes, good book. People just dont grasp how good they have it today.
For buying or working. Saw some pretty nice knock guitars. A couple friends have a couple and say you can’t tell the difference. I may have to try one.
Try working in shipyards in the South during the summer. Maximum suck. But if you need a job.....
Are these people saying they don’t get breaks which would be illegal in California at least or are they saying they can’t get a break to go to the bathroom after they return from their break? I worked in a sawmill and it was expected that you went to the bathroom on your break.
Companies always looking for help is never a good sign.
Or roofing
“Are these people saying they dont get breaks which would be illegal in California at least or are they saying they cant get a break to go to the bathroom after they return from their break”
From what I have been reading Amazon does give breaks but they have such insane production goals people do not go on breaks.
There is a computer watching your production every minute and if you go below production you are written up.
Amazon is slave labor.
They’re building a huge warehouse near Spokane, close to the airport. Should be a boon to low-income residents.
Speaking of which, a very young, very efficient handyman working for our apartment complex told me, when I complimented his good work, “I want to learn all I can and make a decent living at this. All the other guys in my high school class just want to collect welfare and stay stoned full-time. They think I’m nuts to want to work for minimum wage. “
Amazon logistics are for the young, smart, healthy and determined.
Others will fail.
Certainly.
Well, while it sounds like tough work, isn’t slave labor a bit extreme a label?
They are getting a paycheck. And they can quit whenever they want. Unlike actual slaves.
“Amazon is slave labor.”
Absurd.
They follow both the letter and spirit of all employment laws, every day, every facility.
If one is young, smart, fit and ambitious they will succeed there. If one is a drunk smoker over 50 they will fail every time.
