To: Maine Mariner

My 6 uncles were all in the armed forces. All survived. Uncle Bill was in the 1st wave at Omaha Beach. The Detroit Free Press did a nice write up on his experience “A Life on Borrowed Time” in the paper many years ago...complete with sketch artists. Uncle Frank was shot down in the Pacific and picked up by a carrier or sub (I forgot which). R.I.P. men. I’m still driving Uncle Frank’s last car.

My father was not in the armed forces. His brother was.

You should be very proud of those uncles. The character actor Charles Durning was in one of the first waves of men to go ashore on D-Day. People called him a hero and he always said the heros were men who were killed that day.

My son and I watched Tora Tora Tora this morning, in 1971 my dad and I watched it. A great movie indeed.
