It is awful architecture.
The architects were given a once in a lifetime design opportunity. A project with tons of money. A difficult and challenging site. That architecture firm should be drummed out of the profession.
From wiki.....
“.....In June 2016, the foundation chose New York-based Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects and Chicago-based Interactive Design Architects to jointly lead the design and engineering of the center.[28][29] For the exhibition design, Ralph Appelbaum Associates, which worked on the National Museum of African American History, will lead a team including Civic Projects, Normal, and several local artists.[30] The landscape architect is Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, with Site Design Group, and Living Habitats.[31] Lakeside Alliance, which includes Turner Construction and a consortium of local African-American owned firms: Powers & Sons Construction, UJAMAA Construction, Brown & Momen, and Safeway Construction, will build the library.[32’’’’’’’”
They are just your typical affirmative action architects.
I hope it is never built in that park. Always was the wrong location.
Here is a building that could work at that location, and would be a vast improvement if located slight west and adjacent to the park.
It would enlarge and maybe enhance the park.
The same 215,00 sq ft but lower and a much larger footprint.
I hate the city, but for a building like this one, I’d make the 50 klick trek east for a look-see.
