[Good news!
But I can’t help but notice that his name sounds Chinese...]

I don’t want to contradict the SoS, but I suspect he may in fact have been on a mission on Uncle Sam’s behalf. Otherwise, the Chinese government, which is friendly with Iran, would have retrieved him.

From his wife's webpage. Not sure what to make of a Princeton scholar that heads to Iran for research.

Xiyue Wang is a Princeton Ph.D. student in history who has been wrongfully imprisoned since August 2016 in Iran. The news of his detention only became public in July 2017. Wang was conducting research for his dissertation on late 19th and early 20th century Eurasian history. This website has been organized by his friends and colleagues as a source of information on his case and in support of his release. He has a wife and young son who have not seen him in nearly three years.

“Over three years ago, Xiyue left home and arrived in Tehran for his Ph. D. dissertation research. He has been held at Evin Prison for more than 1000 days. He is a scholar, a husband and father, not a spy. It’s time for him to come home.” - Hua Wang, Xiyue Wang's Wife
