It wasn’t because they were bad or stupid. The world is just too complicated.

And everybody up the socialist chain says to themselves, "what's the harm in taking just a little bit extra for me and my family, after all, I'm in a very important position."

There is bad and stupid everywhere but which system allows the bad and stupid to flourish. Socialist goods vs. capitalist goods is all the evidence one needs.

"what's the harm in taking just a little bit extra for me and my family, after all, I'm in a very important position."

This is at the crux of the reason socialism never works. On a purely unconscious, psychological level, people put themselves and their interests above those of others. You don't have to teach toddlers to be selfish, you have to teach them to share. They already know how to be selfish. It's part of human nature. That "me first" mentality is part of our sinful nature and is innate. No matter what flavor or version of socialism is concocted, it's doomed to failure, because people don't have the psychological make up to be socialists, no matter how much you try to program them into it.
