They are equally talented ..... someone else played, while that “banjo boy” (Billy Redden) pretended to do it himself.
“Because he didn’t really know how to play a banjo, he wore a special shirt which allowed a “real” banjo player to hide behind him for the scene (carefully hidden by camera angles) and slip his musician arms around Redden’s waist to actually play the difficult dueling tune.”
