Zambia gay rights row: US ambassador 'threatened' over jailing of couple

The US ambassador to Zambia has said he has been threatened over his comments on the sentencing of a gay couple, deepening a diplomatic row. Daniel Foote said he was "horrified" by the jailing of Japhet Chataba and Steven Samba.

A judge quashed an appeal against their conviction last week, sentencing them both to 15 years in prison. Same-sex relationships are outlawed in Zambia, where British colonial-era laws on homosexuality still apply.

Mr Foote implored the Zambian government to review the case and its homosexuality laws, but has since faced a backlash for doing so.

President Trump is a hotelier. It’s impossible to not have large numbers of gay men in his employ. I think that explains his attitude on this.

To be honest, even if you don’t like homosexuality, this shouldn’t be a criminal offence. Why shouldn’t the American ambassador comment on this and stand up for basic human liberty?

Spoken like a true liberal. It should be outlawed.

So we weren’t OK with British colonial-era laws in the late 1700’s, but evidently people on this thread are all for them now. I guess you all would have been Tories in 1776.

It’s ok to be a gay ambassador, just not a good idea in a country like that, especially if one is into testing ‘tolerance’.

So . . . do Black Africans get a pass on “homophobia” like moslems and Commies (and Black Americans) do?

Because is is not a diplomat’s job to comment on such a thing. Diplomat’s business it to protect the US interests abroad. Fag rights in Zambia is none of US business. If these guys were American he had a right to make such statement but he could do better to explain American homosexuals not to expose themselves in Zambia beforehand.

To be honest, even if you don’t like homosexuality, this shouldn’t be a criminal offence.

Our own Centers for Disease Control publishes the dangers of men engaging in sodomy. It is DEADLY and it spreads disease. It is criminal to hide this fact and 'pretend' disease is not spread through anal intercourse. Some nations know why they treat it as a criminal act to engage in sodomy. Our nation knows it but we refuse to do anything about it in the name of 'diversity.'

Must agree. You don’t name a poofter as Ambassador to a country that still considers homosexuality a mental disorder.

Brilliant comparison. You don’t see foreign ambassadors commenting on this and many other things. That means they still teach their stuff diplomacy but for the Dept of State it is a lost trade.

Foote's lucky that Hitlery Clinton isn't the Sec'y of State and that Soetero isn't the POTUS. Thanks aimhigh.

Not his circus not his monkey. None of the US ambassador’s business what Zambian law is or how they enforce it.

Aside from that, sodomy is destructive to the health and well being of society so they are wise to ban it and we are stupid to pursue a policy of encouraging it here and internationally.

When in Rome, do as the Roman’s do.

You think wandering around the Middle East in a teeny weenie yellow polka dot bikini is just hunky dory?
