In looking through a WWI photo book, I saw a Holy Crap shot of a group of soldiers standing around a human "gingerbread man" like impression in the ground. The cutline said it was a German Zeppelin crew member who bailed sans chute when the airship caught fire.
In another book it mentioned that the airship crews and fighter pilots flew with no chutes on board due to the extra weight. They must have clanked when they walked.
