I confess to not having read the piece yet. That said I live in very rural Mi and know the area and culture well - it is redneck as can be, albeit with the very best folk we have ever lived among..always willing to help others out without being asked. Have never seen a gay or muslim person up here, but occasionally encounter amish teens in stores in groups.
He knows nothing about rural Mi but he sure seems to be trying to look as if he does.
