Dumbarton Pipe Band on the lookout for the next generation of pipers and drummers

Font size=4>Dumbarton and District Pipe Band are on the lookout for the next generation of pipers and drummers after a year without competing.

The Renton-based group were formed in 1968, and this year marked the first time in almost 40 years that they haven’t been able to get a band to play at Levengrove Park’s Remembrance parade.

And that was extremely disappointing for secretary Gordon Hamill.

He said: “I got involved in the band in 1981, and from that date until a week past Sunday I laid a wreath at the remembrance parade at Levengrove Park every year.

“I actually did it this year as well, but we had no band.

“That really hurt for me given the history of it, and it’s something I feel very strongly about.

“It was heartbreaking for me placing the wreath at the monument without the band playing. It seemed weird.

“We have now got a new young blood of committee members who are keen to help and put things forward with new ideas to bring in younger people.”

The band I'm in is having a lot of trouble nowadays fielding enough pipers and (especially) drummers to do performances. I was one of the youngest members when I started twenty-five years ago, and I STILL am.

South Texas isn't exactly Scotland when it comes to piping tradition, anyway, and when people realize how much it'll cost to really get into this, the enthusiasm level tends to drop...
