I’m still not understanding this story.

Did ICE create a fake university, fake website, etc.
How were the students recruited? Were they residents of India, and all they saw was a website for the University of Farmington and apply?

Were they residents of the USA on expiring visas, and attempted to apply for visas under false pretenses? To whom was tuition paid? (I can see some other entity creating the fake university and ICE simply discovered it was fake). I can see the news media misreporting the story like that.

If the students didn’t attempt to go to classes or anything like that and didn’t complain they weren’t getting an education, then obviously the applied for visas under false pretenses. It raises questions about student visas at legitimate schools too.

I read of one American who had four or five degrees - as long as he was in school, he got housing, education, healthcare and a stipend. So, he just became a professional student with no plans to use his multiple degrees for anything.

They sent out emails advertising an opportunity to enhance your resume by offering courses.

...no different than a police sting where they offer free tickets and dinner with an NFL ticket ....only to be arrested for non-payment of child support, etc..
