The Ukraine had problems with Russia before Obama was elected
Ukraine broke away from Russia after the October 1917 Bolshevik coup. By early 1918 the primary non red government was negotiating with the Germans in parallel but separate from the Bolsheviks. There were 5 distinct governments and breakaway areas including far eastern Ukraine. Kyiv changed hands 16 times from 1918 to 1920.
