Go there and call it "Key-ev" - and see what kind of reception you get.

I prefer the Russian pronunciation of KEE-yev. It is more historically accurate pronunciation and the best prediction of how it will be pronounced again in the near future. Ukraine has been an independent nation so little in the last seven hundred years that it simply isn't worth the time to learn the nuances of the local dialects.

Well - they are spelled differently. That’s why they are pronounced differently (took 2 years of Russian in undergrad).
