I read somewhere (sorry, honestly don't remember where) that the idea of removing the VP has been floated too. Something like if they ever succeed in impeaching the President (via lies, perjury, etc.) "the plan" would be to immediately implicate the VP as an accessory and impeach him virtually overnight. The intended effect would be to remove the President and VP simultaneously, before the VP could be "promoted" and name a VP. That would make the Speaker of the House President...

That plan is a bloodless coup, plain and simple. They are trying to remove a duly elected President who is both very effective and whose policies run counter to their politics. In a just world there would be a no-excrement investigation into the leftist democrats attempts at this obvious coup. I don't think it would be beyond reason to ultimately hold a trial and stand them up against a wall.

Of course they want to remove him too, and some of them are even Republicans

We would have a bloody war before that happens.

I don't know if in that scenario (both the President and Vice President being removed simultaneously or almost simultaneously) whether the Speaker of the House would actually become President, or merely "Acting President."

Such a blatant power play may be hard to get 2/3 of the Senate to go along with. More likely, I think, is that they would coerce Pence into nominating someone they like (since he or she would have to get a majority vote in the House as well as in the Senate to be confirmed)--maybe some NeverTrumper ex-senator or ex-governor like Chuck Hagel, someone who would be easy to beat in 2020 after they remove Pence.

I do. I would support skipping the trial part.
