The Latest in Hong Kong: Chinese envoy accuses UK, US of interference

China’s ambassador to Britain has accused the U.K. and U.S. of interfering in the internal affairs of China and Hong Kong as authorities in the semi-autonomous territory struggle to contain months of protests.

Liu Xiaoming told reporters in London on Monday that reports by the British government and Parliament’s foreign affairs committee included “irresponsible remarks” criticizing how the Hong Kong government and police have handled the protests.

Liu said, “they look like they are balanced but as a matter of fact they are taking sides.”

He also said U.S. lawmakers aimed to “blatantly interfere” in Hong Kong when they recently passed a human rights and democracy act.

When asked whether the Chinese government is willing to deploy troops to quell the unrest, Liu hinted Beijing was prepared to take stronger action.

He said, “If the situation becomes uncontrollable, the Chinese government certainly will not sit on our hands and watch, we have enough resolution and power to end the unrest.”

The German government also says it is increasingly concerned by the situation in Hong Kong, where violence between protesters and police has escalated in recent days.

Government spokeswoman Ulrike Demmer said Monday that Germany calls on “all sides, the demonstrators as well as police, to show restraint and willingness to engage in dialogue.”

Demmer says Germany hopes “concrete measures toward de-escalation will be taken as quickly as possible, so that a peaceful solution to the conflict can be achieved.”

Separately, Demmer says Germany has taken note of reports about human rights abuses against members of the Uighur Muslim minority in China’s province of Xinjiang.

She says Germany “won’t stop raising questions about worrying human rights developments worldwide, including toward China.”

Meanwhile (shades of the doomed students of Victor Hugo's LES MISERABLES), it appears the Hong Kong Polytechnic University standoff is coming to a swift end after police stormed the campus, with many students attempting to flee, and many more arrested. According to the BBC:

Around 100 people tried to leave the Polytechnic University, but were met with tear gas and rubber bullets.

In the past week, the campus has turned into a battleground as long-running anti-government protests become more violent.

A small number managed to successfully leave the campus using rope ladders before being picked up by motorcycles.

Hong Kong's Hospital Authority says 116 people have been injured and taken to hospital.

China has gone on the diplomatic and military offensive Monday as China's Defense Minister told his US counterpart that Washington must stop "flexing its muscles" in the South China Sea. At the same time Beijing has deployed its new domestically produced aircraft carrier to the South China Sea for "training and research purposes," CNN reports. Before that it passed through the Taiwan Strait, reportedly followed closely by US and Japanese ships.

China said it would not tolerate "any Taiwan independence incidents" and urged the United States not to provoke any further problems or interference in the region.

Of course we are taking sides. Communism must always be opposed, vigorously.

RE: Of course we are taking sides. Communism must always be opposed, vigorously.

So, China is telling the West NOT to sympathize with the grievances of the Hong Kong people and any expression of support is tantamount to interference?

In other words — SHUT UP USA and UK OR ELSE...

This would be a good GEICO commercial:

If you’re a Chinese Communist, accusing foreign capitalists of interference in your domestic problems is what you do!

If you want to save 15% or more on your car insurance, you switch to GEICO.
