The Hong Kong Protesters Aren’t Driven by Hope “We might as well go down fighting.”

HONG KONG—For months now, I’ve been told that Hong Kong’s protests would end soon. They’ll end when school starts, I heard during the summer. School did start, but the protests wore on, only now I saw high-school students in crisp school uniforms joining the protesters’ ranks. Next, the mask ban of early October was supposed to slow protesters down, but the very first day after that ban, I watched streams of protesters in masks and helmets make their way to their usual haunts on Hong Kong Island.

The government shut down many of the subway lines that day, a practice that has become a de facto curfew, because Hong Kong’s über-efficient subway system is the way most people get around. No matter; the protesters ended up walking, sometimes a lot, and I walked with them, asking some of the same questions I had asked for months: Do you think you will continue protesting? What would it take for you to stop?

One of the most popular chants in Hong Kong is “Five demands, not one less.” These include the full withdrawal of the anti-extradition bill, which originally sparked the protests in June; an independent commission to investigate police misconduct; retracting the riot charges against protesters; amnesty for arrested protesters; and, crucially, universal suffrage.

Nothing animates the Hong Kongers I’ve been talking with as much as that final demand. Yesterday, the police shot one protester in the stomach at point-blank range, and another police officer drove into the protesters with his motorcycle, weaving into the crowd to circle back again. Later in the day, Hong Kong’s chief executive, Carrie Lam, gave a press conference and, in chilling language, called the protesters the “enemy of the people.” She was voted into office by 777 people from the 1,200-person “Election Committee,”

The current demonstrations may end up being the latest in a long line of massacres of anti-government Chinese activists. It is different from the Tiananmen Square demonstrations because those demonstrators loved the Party and did not expect to be massacred. The Hong Kong demonstrators despise the party and fully expect to be killed. And it is also different from the massacres from a century ago because their forebears were much better-armed, although similarly at a severe disadvantage:

First Guangzhou Uprising

Second Guangzhou Uprising

Too bad we can't provide them some manpads and other toys and a few Eurasian looking SOF types on an ‘extended leave of absence’.

The ChiComs will try to play it more like 228 in Taiwan in 1947 than Tiananmen Square 89.

KMT killed and disappeared and jailed thousands over the course of a few months.

Took people away in the middle of the night.

We might as well send China the NFL and NBA, to help provide extra muscle, to kick those anti slavers and freedom lovers in the face, and stomp them into the ground.

Then China could force everyone in Hong Kong to get a tat of Kap on their forehead.

He would be so proud...

China has the help of American liberals in crushing freedom. The same idiots who wear masks and call freedom lovers Nazis support fascism and slavery in the rest of the world.

God bless em.

They have the spirit our Founders had.

The spirit we no longer have.

Are you in HK

I KNOW folks there who see it different

Support for the protestors is thin and narrow

I spoke to an HK American about it last nite

She said the protestors are violent and not well received by the locals

I used to have business there long ago

One person’s opinion on the subject doesn’t make it definitive. These people ARE heroes and hopefully it can provide the spark of revolution.

There are several members here who hate the protesters and keep posting instances of them being violent and destructive, so they may think the protesters should be mainly responsible for this mess.

I would presume some business types in HK would be disapproving of protesters because it might harm their bottom line. No different than the “Loyalists” during our American Revolution.

Did anyone ever expect a different outcome? I’m surprised it took the Chicoms 20 years to exert their power here. I feel nearly as bad for these protesters as I do for the Chinese Muslims locked away in Chicom camps. It is not our problem though. It won’t be our problem when the Chicoms get around to Taiwan either. I don’t care about any commitment that protects Chinese from Chinese that is paid for with the blood of my grandsons. The only positive of the Carter administration was getting us out of the US Taiwan mutual defense treaty.

Support for the American Revolution was also thin at first because of fear of this new completely new idea called freedom. There were many complaints then about the violent nature of the revolution that just about killed the entire idea.

I think what I wanted to say is

I spoke to a Chinese American woman two days ago who thinks the protestors are problematic

This riot fest is over extradition changes

Do Freepers know this

It’s not really about Hk liberty or independence

And it involves gangs fighting each other in part

Triads which are a fact of life in the Territories

Which might explain why Trump is fairly mute over it

As smart as you usually are

Dig into it and then get back to me

It’s not what you think

And yes I wil listen to someone who’s there and has family in Hong Kong as opposed to journalist with an agenda or Freepers who never read articles

Not you lol

I’m serious dig into it like you do TN politics

It’s not about what you think

Have you actually studied the issue with the HK protests?

Most Freepers here simply think it’s a liberty independence movement

It’s not

Which is why Trump is fairly muted on it

“Have you actually studied the issue with the HK protests?”

Yes. I have “studied it.”

“Which is why Trump is fairly muted on it”

Not sure how that has anything to do with whether or not the overwhelming majority of HK are against Communist rule.

Still, check Pompeo’s recent statement.

“Did anyone ever expect a different outcome? I’m surprised it took the Chicoms 20 years to exert their power here. “

It was obvious.

I don’t agree with your nihilism of other comments.
