The thugs were sticking it to Trump as soon as he took office. General Flynn was their first scalp, a mere 5 days after Sessions was sworn in as AG. They were sticking it to Trump over a year before he took office if you count all of the illegal spying and coup plotting.
You complained in your post that Sessions didn’t offer to resign. But he did, and Trump ignored the offer.
Moreover Trump could have fired him at will; he had the sole authority over whether or not Sessions remained as AG. No one else gets a vote; not the Senate, not the Court, not the Special Counsel, not the press, not the Republican party. No one. Myers vs United States, SCOTUS 1926.
He could have replaced Sessions at any time exactly as he ultimately did, using the Federal Vacancies Reform Act of 1998, whether the Senate liked it or not. Yet Trump kept Sessions in place for two years when he didn’t have to.
Either Trump isn’t very smart, or he was afraid, or he knows something that team freeper groupthink doesn’t.
