About a year ago, I changed my vernacular. I rarely talk about “liberals” in a negative tone any more. I talk about “leftists”.
I don’t see them as the same. I’m a classical liberal. We now tend to call that “conservative”.
Liberal = liberty.

Yep, they changed the meaning, as with ‘gay’.
I use ‘proggies’ (for progressives) mostly now.
By whatever name, they hate many things — truth, honesty, honest data, natural law, true history, natural discrimination, healthy shame, responsibility, vote outcomes against them, our Constitution, our laws and those that enforce them.
