A white Southerner confronts her schooling at a segregated private ‘academy’ and challenges others
The Washington Post ^ | 11/07/19 | Vanessa Williams

Faced with growing public pressure to end racial segregation in public schools, thousands of white parents in the early 1970s enrolled their children in private academies that sprang up across the South.

Ellen Ann Fentress, a journalist and writer, was one of them. She is telling her story and urging other alumni of “seg academies” to come forward and give testimony about how attending an intentionally segregated school has shaped their lives as well as the social, political and economic fabric of the South.

Fentress first told her story in June with an essay in the online publication the Bitter Southerner. She wrote of being pulled from her public school in Greenwood, Miss., during her eighth-grade year and plunked down in “a scrambled egg-yellow steel building in a cotton field” called Pillow Academy.

One of my friends (who BTW has oddly transitioned from a staunch libertarian Republican to a flaming liberal posted the above article on his Facebook site.

I am a staunch dislike of White Liberal Guilt and of those who somehow feel they need to offer their testimony as if writing about it will make all well.

What strikes me as so sad about this article is that seg academies are not a new revelation or something dug up in the archives of a southern state. They were real in a number of deep south states. They were a reaction by some white southerners to changes going on in the south.

I absolutely fail to see what can be accomplished by "testifying" about their experiences back then. It's not that we shouldn't acknowledge the wrongs that occurred in the past - but my bottom line is really "What the hell can we do about it now?"

Comments or opinions - anyone?

I’m not sure which I detest more self-pity or self-loathing.

If we are going to relive the past can we at least give Republicans the credit for changing this crap? Can we also hang it around democrats necks for once? No such thing as a republican segregationist or slaveholder.

Wah wah wah.

They need to make sure they move into the inner city and send their kids to the local Government school as penance.

I am not from the South, but wasn’t another reason that folks were just opting out of the insanity of many of the forced busing schemes which were taking people and dumping them into dangerous crappy inner-city schools. While race was obviously part of that, I think parents have a right to make sure their children are in a safe environment that is good for learning.

Before you get too critical, ask: Where did the Clintons’ daughter go? Where did Obama’s kids go? They certainly had the option to go to D.C. public schools but for some reason they didn’t.

IMHO it’s the libs’ way of feeling important without having to do anything meaningful. They trumpet a cause that’s impossible to fix — in this case the past — knowing that nobody will expect them to actually do something to fix the problem (i.e. build a Tardis to go into the past and fix it). No sacrifices will be needed. And no verification can be made to confirm or deny a job was well done. It’s the perfect “cause” requiring no commitment.

Howard Stern talks about his “Good White” Liberal Jewish parents insisted he attend the public school in NY. He talks about how he spent his time being terrorized and beaten, and his parents refused to believe him.

Her parents probably saved her life by putting her in that private school. I lived in Mississippi for a long time, a white girl in a public school that’s 95% black is almost guaranteed to be raped, beaten, or both.

In the '80's, my sister's best friend went to Jefferson Davis Academy in Vimville, Mississippi. Their big rival was Lamar Academy in Meridian.

Fact is, many of these private schools went out of business after a while, while many morphed into multi-racial schools that are more segregated by income than race.

Ha, ha, ha. Perhaps she could atone for her whiteness by visiting East St. Louis on a weekend night.

What LIEberals always fail to acknowledge, is the huge cultural difference between ethnic groups. Asians consistently outscore whites in academic settings, and other races and ethnic groups do differently as well. People are not just a product of their genes, but they are a product of their culture. Perhaps,It was a rejection of a culture, not a race.

It is kind of dumb to dredge up white guilt over a decision your parents made for you. It’s not even their own “guilt.”
