Before we changed over to the Tedkennedy system of immigration, we did very well sucking in the science brains of the world to go to our then superior universities and keeping them here to enhance our economy and thus keep our system far superior in the sciences.If we could cut off immigration for 20 years except for these brains we would remain at the top with an ever widening gap between us and everyone else. Don’t pity the poor techies living in Silicon Valley because they have a bit of competition.They are all going to be increasingly prosperous while making all of us ore prosperous. Of course if our universities continue on their indicated course with math and physics et al being downgraded because of their “inherently sexist” nature then it doesn’t matter, really, because the brains of the world will be avoiding our universities and American geniuses will be seeking better schools elsewhere and staying elsewhere.

”A bit of competition” - you have NO idea what you are talking about. I live here, this is my field, and I’ve seen Americans WIPED OUT from getting jobs, because the Indians are so crony-oriented. You can walk through the entire hardware engineering department and never see anyone who hasn’t come over from India or Pakistan in just the past 8 years.
Long-time highly talented engineer friends now have to take jobs at Home Depot to pay bills. I’ve had to get heath care at a clinic for the indigent because I couldn’t find work while we were STILL flooding the Valley with H1Bs. When you CAN find work, it is as a contractor, where they have you fix the mistakes made by the mindless imports. You have to work _their_ hours, so yo find yourself putting in 13 hour days as a regular thing.
Right now I’m working a defense contract, and about half of the team is H1b or green card, and so regularly trash this country that I wonder if the technology is escaping overseas or won’t work in our version.
