Sessions was confirmed on 8 Feb 2017, and didn't announce his recusal until almost a month later on Mar 2nd. The full text of the confirmation hearing is available online if you look. Recusal is mentioned several times, and Sessions did say he would recuse himself from investigations of Hillary Clinton and the Clinton Foundation, but that's it. At one point, Senator Durbin asked Sessions about recusing from investigations of Trump. It seemed obvious that he was fishing for a promise to recuse, but Sessions didn't take the bait. Here's the text:

DURBIN: ... What if, hypothetical, same as Hillary Clinton, we are dealing with an investigation that involves the Trump campaign or anyone in the Trump campaign, would you recuse yourself as attorney general from that prosecution?

SESSIONS: My response to the -- my recusal issue was because I'd made public comments about it that could be construed as having an opinion on the final judgment that would have to be rendered. I don't think I made any comments on this issue that go to that, but I would review it and try to do the right thing as to whether or not it should stay within the jurisdiction of the attorney general or not.

They also tried to get him to recuse himself, as a Senator, from voting for himself or any other cabinet members. They tried to get him to promise an Independent Counsel to investigate the Trump/Deutsche Bank, which he also declined.

It was only after the left used his "meetings" with Russian Ambassador Kislyak to accuse him of perjury during his confirmation hearings that he announced his recusal. I think some people are confusing his recusal from all things Clinton with his recusal from the Russia investigation.

I'm not a fan of Sessions because I think he caved to pressure rather than fight for his President, his party and his country. He was weak when we needed strength, and that weakness has done considerable damage to our nation. But I'm not a resident of Alabama, so I leave it to Alabamans and Trump to make this decision. If Trump publicly supports Sessions, I think he wins. But that is a huge 'if'. I just hope we don't screw this up and reelect Jones.

Intentionally, in my view...in order to push blame for the Mueller investigation back on Trump.

Sessions is a vain little man for wanting back in to the US Senate after all the damage he caused...and unfortunately for the Republic that may be the best Alabama can come up with.
