"Germany did basically run mexico for a while in the 1800s I think..." France ruled Mexico for a while in the 1800's. They did, however, briefly install a German-born Emperor named Maximilian I, who ended up being Maximilian the Last. He was deposed and executed after two years (1864-1866) by the Republican forces under President Benito Juarez (with the support of the US).

Actually Maximilian was Austrian (the younger brother of Kaiser Franz Joseph).

Maximilian was Austrian not German.
