France ruled Mexico for a while in the 1800's. They did, however, briefly install a German-born Emperor named Maximilian I, who ended up being Maximilian the Last. He was deposed and executed after two years (1864-1866) by the Republican forces under President Benito Juarez (with the support of the US).

Both the US and Mexico probably would be better off if Maximilian had been left in power.

Actually Maximilian was Austrian (the younger brother of Kaiser Franz Joseph).

Maximilian was Austrian not German.
