The second-largest city in Maine, home to thousands of African newcomers, has elected a Somali American to its city council.

Safiya Khalid, 23, soundly defeated a fellow Democrat on Tuesday for a seat on the Lewiston City Council in a campaign that was marred in the final days by racially charged attacks and threats that were fueled by social media.

Maine is a place that seems really a great place to be.

Do you love mosquitoes? I have a place in Maine. If you’re not in a fast moving boat or not directly in a good sea breeze, or not standing directly in a camp fire then you’re what’s for dinner.

We go to Maine every summer...but not where the big crowds are. We want peace, quiet, no human visitors/interactions and just left completely alone. Yeah. I could live as a hermit up there pretty easily.
We go to way downeast in Washington County. The location of where we stay is so far back in the woods, ya gotta pump sunlight in there. Little or no crowds in the area except maybe traffic at the border crossing there in Calais where all those liberal southern flatlanders are trying to get into Canada for vacation. We’re at least 15-20 miles back in the woods from that large metropolis. We only go in there for groceries about once/ two weeks. The local gun club there declared the county as a gun sanctuary county...no one even blinked an eye.

I suggest Tenant’s Harbor. Or next door Martinsville. Still quiet and beautiful although mcmansions are popping up everywhere. How different from when I was a little girl and everyone seemed like Grandpa in The Real McCoys. Avoid beautiful Port Clyde because you’ll run into John Roberts and his bodyguards.

one thing to know about ogunquit though before you decide to go if you do- it’s loaded with gay people- they flock there- and it’s known as a gay destination vacation place now- and some are quite militant- they can be aggressive and in your face- and publicly demonstrative- there are tons of gay bars restaurants shops etc that have cropped up everywhere now- so keep that in mind if you go there- the places i mentioned above are mostly family run places, and not run by homosexuals- at least they weren’t years ago- but they do hire them and sometimes they can be pretty snotty acting- If you stick to a group you’ll be fine- but if you go out at night- know the restaurant or club you are going to beforehand- lots of good clean family run hetero businesses- but you gotta know where they are-

We actually now prefer to stay in another town- and just make short trips to ogunquit for specific things now- like beach or restaurant- in the summer it’s just so busy there that it’s hard to get around by vehicle- (The gridlock can be maddening at times), and way too many aggressive gay people- They don’t let folks just live and let live anymore- We just found it too hard to put up with

Back 30 years ago- the gay community pretty much just kept to themselves- and there were only a few places everyone knew to avoid- but more and more Massachusetts and Canadian gay folks kept moving there- and before long it became just unbearable- They’ve pretty much driven us out- They just gotta ruin everything by being so demonstrative and aggressive- You gotta have a strong stomach to go there now unfortunately- think of it like a mini San Franscisco- just not as crappy-

The right to vote, or hold elected office, should only occur in the second generation of legally admitted immigrants who then become U.S. citizens. Those rights should NOT be part of the 1st generation citizenship package.

I always wished to visit Maine. Might rethink my bucket list. ....naw. .. I’ll be there next summer. :-D

No, definitely visit the Maine coast! It is awesome. We're stuck in The People's Republic of Connecticut, but we go to Maine several times each summer/early fall. The border of ME/NH is about a 3 hour drive from home.

You may want to check out Newport, Rhode Island as well, if you've never been, and you're spending some time in the northeast.

You can thank the Bush family for this and Minnesomolia.

I'm no big fan of the Bush family, however the importation of Somalis into Maine (of all places!) started back in the late 1980s or so thanks to the Catholic Charities of Maine.

These Somalis are SO out of place in Maine... many (if not most) of them collect welfare, and the general population in Maine resents them.

That's why I *never* give to Catholic Charities. I prefer Samaritan's Purse.

Actually, Somali ‘refugees’ were resettled in Maine not in the 1980s, but in the early 2000s. The Clinton administration, some local ME politicians (and Catholic Charities) share the blame.

not looking good for Portland.

This race was in Lewiston Maine.

Portland threw out our liberal loud mouth mayor for a more pragmatic leader.

The beach recedes during the day then rolls back in at night.

The tide does not operate on a 12 and 12 schedule. High and low tide move 15 minutes to an hour depending on where you are on the coast, so it does not roll out during the day and back in at night.

It depends on what you are doing. If you are walking on the beach, low tide. If you are launching a boat, generally you need a higher tide at the boat ramp.

People who work and recreate on the ocean work their lives around the timing of the tides.
