President Trump tried. And he warned Kentuckians at a huge rally a few days ago that the gubernatorial race was going to be viewed by all as a referendum on him.
So the apparent loss of Republican Gov. Matt Bevin to Democrat Andy Beshear last night, is a stinger. A Trump endorsement is usually a surefire means of winning the election and it has been up until now for nearly all candidates in special elections, which is why so many candidates want them. Once Trump endorses, Republicans almost always win.
But apparently, not even a Trump endorsement was enough for Bevin, who had some popularity problems. The punditocracy of course is calling curtains for Trump. The Washington Post is calling it "embarrassing." But there's plenty of reason to be dubious.
Bevin seems to have lost for three reasons:
One as the Washington Post notes, he only got into office four years ago by a thin 85,000-vote margin. So he was on thin ice all through his term and didn't work to increase his support.
Two, he had a third party challenge. Sen. Rand Paul is a popular Senator in Kentucky and on that ground alone, his libertarian allies managed to run a third-party candidate that won 2% of the vote. Had they not, Bevin might have pulled through.
Three, and this seems to have been the big one: Bevin wasn't popular. A poll that ran in April had him ranked as the least popular governor in all 50 states. According to the WaPo, he had a brash abrasive personality that tended to annoy people.

KY is safe for Trump. Hell carry it comfortably next November.
Oh, I see. It’s on the ... digest page? or whatever that screen is ... but it’s not there if you go straight to the article.
I give the author credit for not using the phrase.
It is a suspicious win. The winning Agriculture Commissioner got 100,000 more votes than the guy who won the Governor. How many people can even name the AG Commissioner? That said it should not have been that close. KY was down to 1 abortion mill. So the pro abortion machine got the women to make this close enough to steal. Does the GOP not care that somehow they seem to lose every close race even if it takes a few days?
KY has only recently began to vote GOP Statewide. So, this is not a big deal. A better candidate will take back the seat in the next election. The GOP dominated the rest of the State election.
Message from Kentucky: People like their free-shit from the Government, and particular, people in government like their free-shit from the taxpayers. if you oppose them, they will destroy you.
I think this is a cop-out. One would think that if he had a record to run on then the personality wouldn't have beaten him. Otherwise Trump is in trouble.
No one is underestimating the Democrats, but lets not overestimate them either.
People just didnt like Bevin! You had a lot of split ticket voting. People voted for Beshear as a protest then switched to down ballot support of the GOP.
Nothing suspicious about it.
Churchill once said that someone who is a conservative at age 20 has no heart, but that someone who is a liberal at age 40 has no head.
And OH. It could have been a lot worse. Thats always the case with midterms, barring rare elections such as those in 1934 and 2002.
IMO, the Beshear campaign ad that brought up irregularities regarding Bevin’s use of State aircraft during the campaign was a coffin nail. Especially Bevin’s quote of (paraphased) “It’s no one’s business” when asked about it.
RE: The midterm lose of the House was due to a combination of it being a midterm election and Democrat fraud. Trump added two Senators and we held the Governorships in FL. and GA.
1. RE: FRAUD: If the fraud was rampant in 2018 and the Dems got away with it, HOW MUCH MORE FOR 2020? WE SHOULD EXPECT MORE OF IT !!
2. RE: Mid term elections: Not sure what this has to do with anything. If there was overwhelming support for Trump’s policies, I would expect a huge Republican turnout to MAINTAIN Trump’s momentum in 2016 in the 2018 elections. That did not happen. At least we would not have seen a huge Congressional takeover of over 30 seats.
I’d understand a few seats, but this huge turnover? It shows energy on the Democrats’ side and lethargy on the Republican side.
3. RE: Governorships in FL. and GA.
Yes, squeakers both. Two red states should have been an easy win, which they were not. And Ted Cruz won by a squeaker in red Texas against the substance-less, extreme liberal, gun grabbing pipsqueak Beto O’Rourke. We are hanging by a thread in this country.
Good Catch!
“The article does not contain the phrase mighty Trump endorsement, either in the title or in the text. How did it end up in quotes in your title?”
Actual headline/title
“Message from Kentucky: Strong candidates matter”

WOW! Talk about reading the “fine print”. How did you ever find that?
Better yet, why would you use it? It’s not the title of the article. It’s not even the title under the “blog” heading.
The link under the blog heading just takes you to the same exact article as posted, where “The Mighty Trump Endorsement” language is NOT used.
The only place I found it used was right where you got it from. A “sub” heading or description used under the “Blog” category. There is no attribution as to WHO actually wrote those words. The author doesn’t use them no matter how you get to the article.
So, I said all that, to say this.... You seem to have gone very deep to try to find something to smear Trump with, Why?
I think you’ve been outed. (caught)
President Trump helped Republicans win 5 out of 6 statewide offices. To some people, the glass is always 1/6th empty.
I don’t think that was the intention. Just one of those glitches where the site has a mess of different screens. Sometimes sites will even change the title of a piece after a day or so.
So youre saying that 100,000 people voted for the the Agricultural Commissioner and didnt cast a vote in the Governors race. Sorry that just seems pretty unlikely. Granted I am going by another posters figures so I could be wrong.
RE: So, I said all that, to say this.... You seem to have gone very deep to try to find something to smear Trump with, Why?
Let me ask you this... why would you take this as a smear
against Trump?
Calling him “mighty” is a compliment the way I see it.
RE: I think youve been outed. (caught)
I’ve been in FR for nearly 20 years.
My posts are well known. Many are supportive of Trump. So are my comments about him ( generally supportive of his policies ).
I don’t know what “outed” means.
