Back in the days of the non-aggression pact, when Hitler and Stalin were pals, so were commies and Nazis. Woody Guthrie had a famous sign that he draped over his guitar when he played saying “this machine kills fascists,” but he was the exception. His pal Pete Seeger was agitating for peace until Hitler invaded the Russian side of Poland and kept going over the Bug, when he belatedly started agitating for war.
Parenthetically, I used to know a man who was 13 at the time, and escaped the German einschluss on a horse he happened to get his hands on, and fought with the partisans against the Nazis in occupied Eastern Poland/Ukraine. He wasn’t a communist, and he wasn’t a Polish nationalist, just a teenage Jewish boy fighting to survive.
