I’m thinking Saddam wasn’t all that interested in over-running Riyadh. The invasion began, IIRC, August 2nd. I flew into Riyadh with my unit, the 507th Tactical Air Control Center Squadron, on the 15th. We were kind of expecting a hot LZ when we got there, but the Iraqis were still ravaging Kuwait. They had plenty of time, if interested, as it’s only about 350 miles from the border with Kuwait, IIRC.
