Winston Churchill once astutely observed that you can always count on the American people to do the right thing.

Once they have exhausted all of the alternatives.

I’m afraid we’re going to do socialism simply because its an alternative we haven’t tried yet. Most won’t believe it can’t work until they’ve experienced the failure first-hand.

I believe that much of the impetus for that is that we all share a cultural belief that America can accomplish anything. So the fact that Socialism has never worked anywhere means nothing. In the minds of young socialists, we will make it work because we are Americans.

Also, the latest narrative is that all government functions are Socialism. So if you support police (and fire, if your FD is not volunteer), then you support socialism.

I would propose it differently.

When I started hunting, my brother set me up in a tree by an open gate. I said to him, “why would the deer walk all the way over here, thru the gate and back when they could just jump the fence? He said, “Deer are like people they will always take the easiest path.”

What is the easiest path today?
