Young folks have crushing student loan debt and cannot afford a $30k + vehicle. 50% of the population are poor or heading that way
Peter Luft ex GM CEPO said in a letter last year in 12-15 years privately owned cars will be rare due to cost and self driving cars that will pick you up and drop you off.

It's difficult to make predictions, especially about the future, but I agree with Luft. I think private car ownership is going to disappear sometime in the future, if autonomous vehicles become commonplace. For a variety of reasons. Cost, the end of the pleasure of driving, environmentalism pushing less consumerism, etc. Collectors will still own Model Ts and old Italian sports cars, and companies will still own trucks and other vehicles, but I dont think the average person will have their own car.
