The attitude of some of the Orthodox Rabbis towards the non-Orthodox can be incomprehensible.

It is not. It's perfectly comprehensible.

The restored Biblical Theocracy can't come quickly enough.

“seemed to equivocate on calling the house of worship a synagogue”

The word is from a Greek word meaning “assembly”, and certainly Jews assemble there. His equivocation seems baseless, even if he questions whether Judaism is being practiced there.

This article is depressing. It reads like the paralysis is going to be slow death for Israel.

Israeli politics are pretty complex.

There is a natural right wing majority but unless Lieberman is willing to bend, things will remain at a stalemate for the foreseeable future.

What?

The Haredim live off welfare and don’t contribute to the armed forces.

So the non-Orthodox have to work and pay for the Orthodox to live and the non-Orthodox also have to fight and die for the Orthodox.

And the Orthodox act sniffy to them???

The Orthodox should be conscripted and should go and work.

RE: The Orthodox should be conscripted and should go and work.

The Orthodox in the USA WORK and many have their own businesses. What makes the Orthodox in Israel different?

“What makes the Orthodox in Israel different?”

Much more political clout. Same as it ever was.

RE: Much more political clout. Same as it ever was.

I was referring to their lifestyle (work and employment, business, etc. ) , not their political clout.

I dunno. btw, I specifically meant the Orthodox in Israel. I have no doubt they can be an asset both to the workforce and the military.

Thanks for your information.

I do have a few questions:

1) How large is the Haredim with respect to the Israeli voting population?

2) Do their members get professional (non-religious) degrees in college, find employment or own businesses?

Thanks

You mean ‘many of the ultraOrthodox’.

The Dati Leumi (Religious Nationalists) represent a majority of the Orthodox and are over represented in the IDF and don’t collect welfare.

Haredi ultraOrthodox represent maybe 10% of the population, and certainly not all of them collect welfare or skip the military.

Personal status laws such as marriage are the same as they have always been among Jews in the Land of Israel. The modern state incorporated certain recognition of traditional Judaism as part of its ‘basic law’ as a way to assure unity in 1947. It’s known as the Status Quo of 1947 and is the equivalent of Constitutional law in the US.

Socialists/communists continue to lose their grasp over Israel, so naturally are in a panic to make Israel the equivalent of New York or California.
