Tomorrow, Japan's Emperor Naruhito will proclaim his succession to the Chrysanthemum Throne in an enthronement ceremony. ... Notably, U.S. transportation secretary Elaine Chao is expected to attend. (Previously Vice President Mike Pence was supposed to travel to Japan for the ceremony, but a change was made somewhat last minute).

Prince Charles will also be there, representing the United Kingdom—he previously attended Akihito's enthronement ceremony with Princess Diana—as will other members of royal families throughout the world such as: King Jigme and Queen Jetsun of Bhutan, Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, and King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain, among others. ...

Well, maybe Pence had something more important to do. Especially given all the news about the coup that's come out in the last 48 hours.

There’s a royal concubine just put on waivers by Thailand. Maybe he can sign her as a free agent

Why would you say that?
Do you work for the NY Jets and are embarrassed and frustrated?

You think so? Maybe the European royals have a good time, but the Japanese Emperor is the definitive “bird in a gilded cage”.

He has no freedom at all. Everything he eats, drinks, wears, is decided by rules set in iron. Everywhere he goes, everything he says publicly, is decided for him by imperial bureaucrats.

He’ll never be able to walk into a bar and order a beer, walk down the street listening to his iPod, or just go to the park and just hang out with buddies. Ever.

I think prison would be easier.
