I'm not going to be argumentative, but rest assured that Turkey is not an ally.
Whether in NATO or out of NATO.
The allegiance of Turkey lies only in one direction...that of Mecca and the Moon-God Cultist False Religion of Islam...or their version of it.
Turkey would never respond as a NATO partner were a NATO country invaded and attacked by one of the Moon-God Cultist False Religion of Islam countries.
Period.
Trump knows this.
We must remember that this whole “Turkey-Kurds” kerfluffle is being promoted hysterically by the NeoCons, The Democrats and the Media [but I repeat myself].
And.
This has to do with control of access to the Black Sea. Geography is destiny.

Why should we have empowered Russia? Russia, whether tsarist, Soviet or federal republic has always been a bad neighbour and an aggressive threat to be held in check. Turkey was never loved by Britain, but the British knew, as the Americans did, that it would be best to stop the Russians having unfettered access to gen Meditarranian.
Easy to say that now. But in 1949? The Turkish Army together with the rebuilt West German were the biggest ground forces in the alliance. We were just a tripwire force meant to hold until the cavalry came over from CONUS.
I don’t think anybody in the Arab parts of the mideast want a redo of the Turkish-run Caliphate. The Saudi’s lead the revolt against the Turk during the Great War, so yeah, they are the two key antagonists.
There’s a lot of sand for the Russians to play with in the middle east. We have oil here in good ‘ole USA so they can knock themselves out. Oh, let’s kick out Turkey since they’re no longer a “Western” nation.
Oh well, 70 years is a pretty good run for an alliance. Time to get some new ones.
