It is called Saigon by a lot of people who grew up here. There are still lots of places with the name.
People from the northern parts of the country, and maps and such say Thanh Pho Ho Chi Minh. I also do, my wife has most of her family (though just over half) from the north, so I refer to it as Ho Chi Minh City.
They’re not real hung up about such things, though. I have never been corrected either way.
There was a period of time following the war, when things were quite opposite, but now it seems to have turned around quite remarkably.
Even up north, there is MUCH more attention paid to making sure you are properly documented if you are here visiting, but the way one of the guys from my wife’s village explained it to me, they just want to be sure I had good intentions.
I did, so it wasn’t any sort of issue.
I really think this is the time, for companies to come here.
It is quite remarkable.
I have lived here now, almost four years.
In all of that time, I have I think, met TWO racist Vietnamese.
Really.
It is quite remarkable.
Unlike any other place I have been.
Is Chinatown still called Cho Long?
