I lived in the UK in the seventies and the normal fare in a restaurant really sucked. The Indian and Pakistani restaurants were most excellent as were the French, Greek, and Italian restaurants. When wife and I went out it was mostly Indian food. The fish and chips at the locals was always good but oddly it was mostly done by Chinese owners. They did it exactly as the Brits did fish and chips.
As the UK became more prosperous, thanks to Margaret Thatcher, the people demanded a better fare. Oddly today you can have a first class meal in a restaurant or good pub. It is not cheap but it is good.
