[More of my opinion of the “big picture” FWIW:
China wants stability in the region for 2 good reasons:
A rail route through Turkey to Europe for their goods, and a route to the Med for their goods.

Let China pay for that, not us.]

Xi Jinping is an intra-party political schemer, not an economic thinker. Ocean freight is cheaper than its rail counterpart by an order of magnitude. Belt and Road is a stupid white elephant from which China will not see the return of principal, let alone any profits. The journalists getting bent out of shape don’t understand basic finance. Mao’s big idea was the Great Leap Forward. Xi’s is Belt and Road.

Ocean freight is cheaper, but tankers don’t carry refrigerators.
And rail is faster.
