In my neck of the Upstate NY woods, owners of an existing home worth 200 grand can pay almost 5 figs in annual property taxes.

And the owners aren’t rich.

That said, the SALT cap needs to stay.

All deductibility does is encourage Albany to screwing taxpayers.

I’d support removing the deduction entirely, even though I live in NYS and own a home.

People have been fleeing NYS for decades. In 60 years the state has lost almost half its House seats. The SALT cap has likely helped accelerate that, which is why NY pols are panicking. But do you know what happens when NYSers get federal tax relief? State and local taxes get jacked.

Enabling state pols by screwing federal taxpayers is NOT the answer, SkyPilot.

Sorry, duplicate photo from last post.

This is a photo from Virginia of people scrambling to pre-pay property taxes, dated December 2017 (as are the other photos).

FAIRFAX, VA - DECEMBER 28: Residents wait in line to pay taxes at the Fairfax County Government Center December 28, 2017 in Fairfax, Virginia. Many people are pre-paying their 2018 property taxes before the end of the calendar year in an attempt to blunt the effects of the new Republican tax law's $10,000 cap on deductions for state and local taxes that will disproportionately affect higher-tax, Democratic-leaning states. I hate the local liberals and their taxes.

But forcing out Republicans in many states, and completely abandoning them all to liberals is NOT a winning strategy - either politically or for our nation.

You know, "One Nation, Under God", and all that.

We used to be a nation. I guess now we're just a bunch of tribes.

In the last mid-terms, we lost solid Republican seats in New Jersey, California, Virginia, New York, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Michigan, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, and Illinois. Seats we shouldn't have lost. And many of those were lost (in part) because of this stupid "tax cut" that effectively raised people's taxes.

Yes, people are moving to other states to avoid being destroyed by high taxes. The power to tax is the power to destroy.

And it was Republicans that raised many of our taxes at the Federal level.

FWIW, I don’t give a dang about the party affiliation of the pol doing the screwing. In any case, anymore there’s no real difference. There’s only the uniparty and Trump anymore. But I’m an American, first to last. NOT a NYSer. If something is great for my state, but sticks it to the other 49, I am NOT going to support it.

As for folks fleeing states like NYS, which we plan to do if nothing changes, I consider those folks are doing the nation a service. Less say in the chamber with the power of the purse may suck for NYS, but it’s real good news for the rest of the country.

there are just 5-7 major metropolitan regions in the USA accounting for the bulk of the Federal deficit. Literally. They have perfected the art of regional extortion of Fed.gov through their local political, legislative and judicial criminality.

SALT removes one form of Federal subsidy of a process profoundly destructive of the Republic.

naturally a chunk of Congress, DC and local states are all incensed at the “interference in their business model”.

People who have homes they built, businesses they run, children nearby who have put down roots, or aged parents to care for should be trampled upon and run out of town because of the destructive tax policies of Republicans who we voted for and supported.

You try picking up your family and moving from your beloved home and leaving everything you know. After you do, get back to us regarding everyone’s willingness/happiness.

Living in a high tax state is a voluntary choice. Just like being homosexual, or wanting to use bathrooms of the opposite gender. No one else should be required to validate or subsidize poor choices that are bad for society and the republic.

And millions of people had their taxes raised by Paul Ryan, Steve Mnuchin, and President Trump.

PDJT was elected to be bring the battle to the liberal elites, support job creators and roll back the social and legal failings perpetrated by previous administrations. He is doing his part at great personal cost and sacrifice. All conservatives should be prepared to make a similar contribution.

Specifically, the vote will be on “a resolution to repeal the IRS rule that prohibits states and local governments from protecting residents from ‘double taxation’ of their local charitable contributions and State and Local Taxes (SALT) under the Trump tax bill,” Schumer, a Democrat from New York, said in a press release.

Why doesn't Schumer just call for New York to reduce local taxes?

I’m glad to hear that Hogan wanted to change that. I would’ve just doubled Maryland’s standard deduction and lowered rates — 4.5% flat tax for corps and individuals, sales tax back to 5% and elimination of state property tax. Plus capping county income tax rates at 2.5% and capping county property taxes at 1.25% (a little over 1/2 of Baltimore’s onerous rate of 2.24%).

PARRIS GLENDENING, of all people, wanted the personal tax to eventually be 4.5 percent and signed a bill doing just that, and he apparently wanted the state property tax to be eliminated, IIRC. Just following a Democrat’s wishes, I would say to the radical leftist Democrat legisl00ter objectors.

I’d bring back the personal exemptions. I’m personally doing OK, because my SALT is below $10,000, but other people aren’t.

People should stop thinking about how to “pay for” certain tax cuts, and just let people enjoy more of their own money on the individual side, which is actually the demand side, not the supply side, IMO.

1/2 * (income tax + sales tax + property tax): respecting state sovereignty while not giving legisl00ters as much of an excuse to send state taxes to the friggin’ moon.

Dude, while the federal subsidy of your state/local taxes may have been eliminated or reduced, you also got reduced tax rates/brackets and, for many people, elimination of the AMT.

If folks in the high tax blue states computed their taxes both under all the old (I.e., before tax reform) rules and under the new tax rules (lower rates, etc.) most would find they still had their federal taxes reduced — just not as much they would have been reduced had their SALT subsidy been unchanged.

Folks pay attention to what “hurts” them and do not see what helps them

Yup. And the truth is still falling on deaf ears. The herd mentality is a strong tendency. People believed the Paul Ryan rhetoric: "XXX states are being SUBSIDIZED by XXX states!"

What Chuck Schumer is doing by forcing a vote on the SALT provision is actually very smart. The Democrats haven't done jack since taking the House, but truth be told the Republicans didn't pass much either (besides the Tax Bill). Schumer knows that "impeachment" isn't enough to give them an agenda, but refocusing on taxes ignites people. The Republicans tried campaigning on the Tax Bill during the midterms last year, and got their a$$ handed to them. The shift is now to the economic news, but the economic platform is a shifting sand. All it takes is one big stock market loss a few days before the election or something else to shatter that campaign slogan.

The Republicans targeted both of those and more, because they needed our money. The corporate tax cut was massive. And it's permanent (unlike all of the "benefits" to the middle class that people keep cheerleading).

There are still people here who try and argue this ridiculous line: "Corporations don't pay taxes!" OK. If that's true, then lets just hike the rate back up to 35% then. I am sure the corporations and their million dollar lobbyists wouldn't mind. Well, of course they mind. Because corporations pay taxes. Now, some are better at not paying more than others. But they paid off lobbyists and bribed Congress persons handsomely to get that rate cut.

My position has been that there should be a SALT Deduction limit, but making it only $10,000 was ridiculous.

It is my understanding that it was Senator Susan Collins who insisted they get away from the original idea of no SALT Deduction so they agreed on $10,000 to get her Vote.

IMHO they should have tied the SALT Deduction to the Standard Deduction, $12,500 for Single Tax Filers, $25,000 for Joint and Head of Household Filers. It would be a good compromise.

If they agree to make the changes, they should also let People refile their 2018 Federal Income Taxes if the change would benefit them.

Others disagree, but you are correct that this cost us Congressional Seats in Blue States because many Middle Class and Upper Middle Class Voters were impacted. I saw it firsthand in what was the former Conservative holdout of Orange County CA.

The very idea that Rat Katie Porter won the Irvine area District was proof enough even with the Ballot Harvesting the Rats pulled off, it shouldn’t have been close to begin with.

The same applies to other Orange County Seats. We had good Candidates and not so good Candidates, my old Congressman Dana Rohrabacher being one of the latter. Ironically, he Voted against the Tax Reform Bill with this being a primary reason. He still lost to a Rich Rat who outspent him bigly.

Apparently this is a point of contention here, but to me it was an unforced error by the GOP. They didn’t choose wisely.
