Roughly 1,800 U.S. service members, as well as several dozen fighter jets and other air defense implements, will be sent to Saudi Arabia to help protect the Kingdom amid heightened tensions with Iran, the Pentagon announced Friday.
Officials said the U.S. is set to ship two F-15 squadrons, two Patriot missile batteries, one anti-missile defense system known as THADD and other planes.
Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said he informed Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman earlier Friday about the additional troops to ensure and enhance the defense of Saudi Arabia.
"Saudi Arabia is a longstanding security partner in the Middle East and has asked for additional support to supplement their own defense and defend the international rules-based order," Esper told reporters at the Pentagon.
The Pentagons announcement came just hours after Iranian officials said two missiles from an undetermined source hit one of its oil tankers that was traveling through the Red Sea about 60 miles off the coast of Saudi Arabia.
The explosions from the missiles damaged two storerooms aboard the oil tanker identified as the Sibiti and caused a brief oil leak into the Red Sea. The leak was later plugged, Iranian state television reported.

Have you forgotten that Mohamed Atta and his fellow terrorists were trained to fly in Florida at a pilot training school?
They were here on a travel visa.
The Saudis didn’t train them. Who funded them is another question — most likely Obama Bin Laden (sorry I couldn’t resist the play on words). After all, Obama Bin Laden took credit for all of it.
I don’t believe the crap about the Saudi gov’t being behind 911. Just because most of the terrorist animals were Saudi doesn’t mean the gov’t was behind the plot. It just doesn’t seem in Saudi Arabia’s interest to do that to the US.
2 Squadrons of F-15’s plus a support Group, and maybe a battalion of security troops. Probably all USAF, but the security might also be Army. The missile detachments would be Army.
This is likely to stop Iran, and, to build up a debt of, “you owe us big time” to the House of Saud. Meaning, we’ll be able to call in favors in future.
Trump has agreed with MBS,Mohammad Ben Salmon, for the Saudis to take leadership role in fighting terrorists and other issues like what is going on now with the kurds being savaged by long time enemies the turks.
The US will still provide logistic and be in the background if needed. But, it's not likely. The Saudis have excellent troop strength, quality weapons and are extremely well trained. It's likely MBS will help the kurds ASAP,anyway I sure hope so.
Or in kurdville.
Finally someone who gets it,thank you. Also 3,000 architects are not fooled either.
It ends when China rules the world and we sit and wonder what the hell happened.
THey also have specila ops personnell that are second to none on a par with our seals.
I am really confused why the USA policy to to remove troops out of Syria but put more troops in Saudia Arabia. The policy is not clear if you try to use the endless war argument.
3. who loaded all three builidngs with explosives.....
And Israel along with Saudi Arabia’s help is getting ready to take out Iran’s nuclear program. Our technology is needed And it will be provided.
Trump allowing Turkey to invade Syria a is a prepayment of penance for what’s about ready to happen to Iran. In other words it’s time for some roast and toast.
That’s fine, and that is what we have been doing with the Kurds.
As for me, I’d rather the 1,800 was going to help the Kurds not the Saudis.
1. It’s disingenuous to say you are cutting our support somewhere because we should not be entering a bunch of new wars there;
2. and then retreat from allies you have fought and died with just when they are about to come under attack, and
3. give even a whole lot more new aid to a nation that can well afford all the military means it needs, on its own.
Who would I rather help defend, the Saudis, or the Kurds. Definitely the Kurds.
I think the U.S. switch of cutting the aid to the Kurds but to turn around and send even more aid to the Saudis is duplicitous. It’s double speak. The same justification for leaving the Kurds to fend for themselves can even more easily be made in the case of the Saudis.

Sounds like a false flag by Iran, after their actions recently.
My guess is these are Patriot anti-missile crews, training Saudis.
They’ll be out soon enough.
Seems you missed there are 2 Kurd factions. One is hard core Islamists, the other moderate and they fight amongst each other. Not only those are in Syria, but Assad and his civil war, Russians, Turks, Iranians, and others I don't remember. I'm glad to get out that mess. It was supposed to be for 30 days.
I agree about the Saudis. Let them deal with it. The first major attack against Israel, we go all out and kill them all with MOABs and other bunker busters. Let all the muslim hoards kill each other, just don't frick with Israel.
Ditto.
Plus Saudi Arabia does not have a Constitution. The Koran is the law of the land.
Not Worth Fighting For.
Screw the saracens, and their pedophile prophet and moon god.
That was precisely the point of my asking those two questions... {:-)
Not to start a new conspiracy theory, but I think Omar and her icestuos brother/husband should be investigated just on principle...
Why wouldn't they be under suspicion of being co-conspiritors with the Taliban...
