Which ones?

High winds cause high voltage transmission lines to "gallop" or swing wildly. If they contact each other or contact nearby trees, sparks fall and set fires. It really isn't a problem of the lines falling down (at least until the fires burn the poles and the distribution lines come down).

Interestingly, investigations show a lot of the recent forest fires were caused by power lines on private land, not by PG&E transmission lines.

The fix is more aggressive tree-trimming so lines don't contact trees. I'm not sure why the budgeting isn't adequate to trim adequately. I'd guess that too much money is being spent on renewables, but the money for generation and T&D are from different companies that don't compete.

What a scary job piloting that helo! Not a lot of room for error.

Return to the days of the Old West, now playing at homes & businesses throughout the (formerly) Great State of California! Ronald Reagan is shaking his ghostly head at what his successors have made of his demi-paradise!

I waited as long as I could to bail out of that disaster hoping it would somehow get turned around...Until we became so outnumbered by lunatic leftist and illegals I knew it was over and there was no turning back to what CA once was...Never going to happen..All that is left is an overcrowded sh*t bucket of liberal blockheads and illegals. Now I'm a happy camper and only regret waiting so long.☺

This is insane.

20 years ago my European friends and relatives chided us on these above ground power lines. So antique tech. Why do we have to spend all our $ on homeless drug addicts and illegals, when we could have made safe, underground power lines like other first world countries?

It’s not like the power co’s are strapped for cash.

It is absolutely unreal. It is so hard to believe even when seeing it all with my own eyes. Beautiful boulevards in expensive neighborhoods with third world encampments on it. When I was 17 in Calcutta India it blew my mind to see the people living on the boulevards. It was true culture shock and I felt sick for weeks having seen it. My little kids are growing up with it here in our neighborhood.

If I lived in PG&E’s footprint, I would have bought a whole house generator or battery for my solar system months ago.

We live in an outlying area where we lose power frequently from trees knocking lines down. We have been using a generator for many years for these occasions. Even an entire bank of golf cart batteries doesn't store the amount of energy contained in a few gallons of gas.

And if you are using a gasoline powered generator even the most efficient models go through a lot of fuel. We generally went through 10 gallons a day, and sometimes more. Fortunately, we have natural gas and were able to convert our generator to use that. This cut our fuel expenses to 1/3rd of what they were. Which still means that our electricity costs around 3 times what it normally does.

If you live out in the stocks where there is no natural gas, your best option would likely be to get a big propane tank and run your generator on that. It would cost multiple times what natural gas costs, but around here a lot of times the nearby gas stations lose their power also and can't fill up your containers, which can mean a long drive.

Thanks for the information. Looks like a long-time neglect of what needed to be done.

We don’t have that kind of problem here, but I have noticed how Cook County, IL neglects maintenance of its large forest preserves. Most of them are thick with underbrush dead and alive, and dead and fallen trees, and they could easily catch fire too.

Government regulated monopolies are what we should have in every segment.

They work fairly well in Venezuela. And remember, under Communism, the electricity you don't get is absolutely free!
