PARISAs police intelligence agents in Paris tracked Islamist radicals over the summer, one of their longtime colleagues was quietly embracing a more extreme version of his Muslim faith.
While away from the office, Mickaël Harpon, a 45-year-old convert to Islam, had begun dressing in more religious garb and established ties with followers of Salafism, a fundamentalist strain of Islam, according to prosecutors. At work, he appeared to avoid physical contact with women, colleagues would later tell prosecutors.
During his lunch break last week, Harpon bought two knives, returned to the office and stabbed four of his colleagues to death. He wounded a fifth one before a rookie police officer shot him dead.
Harpons drift toward fundamentalist Islam went undetected even though he worked inside the Paris polices intelligence division: an elite unit charged with monitoring Islamist extremists across the French capital.
As one of the units information technology specialists, Harpon sat at a desk located just steps away from the divisions leadership. He held a high-level security clearance and had access to the units computer system that contains detailed information about undercover police operations under way in mosques across Paris.
The attack has stunned France and its sprawling counterterrorism apparatus, shattering confidence in the security-services procedures for detecting extremists in their midst. Investigators are examining whether Harpon compromised ongoing operations and revealed the identity of undercover police agents.
Authorities discovered several USB flash drives at his desk, one containing the personal information of agents and violent Islamist propaganda, authorities said. Some 160 agents are poring over the data on that flash drive, officials said.
A key question is whether Harpon downloaded that data onto the flash drive for his job as an information technology assistant in the divisionwhich monitors online Islamist propagandaor to send it to his extremist contacts

One moral of this story: Every Muslim is a moderate until he is not.
Yep. And even those muslims that really are moderate - every one of them - feels that all governments must be converted to sharia.
This makes EVERY muslim the enemy of every other culture on the planet.
Seems to be ok with the USA or they wouldn’t have put Brennen in charge of the CIA. /sar
Translator charged after his voice was intercepted on calls
;A former FBI translator has been charged with doctoring transcripts in which his own name appeared on intercepts of phone calls placed by a terrorism suspect.
Abdirizak Jaji Raghe Wehelie, 66, of Burke, Virginia, was arrested Saturday at an airport after returning to the U.S. on an international fight, according to Josh Stueve, a spokesman for the US attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia.
Wehelie made an initial appearance Monday at the federal courthouse in Alexandria, where he is charged with making false statements and obstructing an investigation.
An indictment unsealed Monday states that Wehelie worked as a contractor for the FBI from 2012 to 2015. In December 2012, a man targeted by the FBI in an investigation connected to the Al-Shabab terrorist group in Somalia called and left a voicemail message for Wehelie.
The call was intercepted under court-ordered surveillance, and Wehelie was tasked the next day with translating the call. He marked himself down as "unidentified male" even though the voicemail message on Wehelie's cellphone identified him as "Abdirizak Wehelie."
The FBI questioned Wehelie about his actions in 2016. At the time, according to the indictment, Wehelie admitted that he should not have identified himself as an "unidentified male" on that translation. He also told FBI agents that he had never actually had a phone conversation with the person who called him and that he didn't know the person very well. But a subsequent FBI investigation revealed that the two had nearly 180 phone contacts from 2010 to 2017.
The FBI employed Wehelie as a contractor even though his adult children had been placed on the no-fly list and denied re-entry to the U.S. for several weeks in 2010, well before Abdirizak Wehelie began his work for the FBI.'
Not an original thought, and one seen here periodically. But one that bears repeating:
Islam is a war plan.

What do you mean “turned to terror”? This explains what I mean: “a 45-year-old convert to Islam.”
