Jeez, I was raised to NEVER quit a job without having another one lined up. That is not always an easy thing to do but it is the responsible thing. And this includes not actually leaving until acceptable notice is given to the employer — even in situations where the employer is a complete jerk.

I stuck to that principle faithfully for most of my work life, EXCEPT for one job almost 30 years ago that, after 2 weeks, I just could not endure any longer. So I gave my notice and left the same day.

Funny thing happened though. A few weeks later, the HR Director called me to see if I'd be interested in a different position at the Company! I declined, however.

Wrong. I did. Management changed from Australian management to greedy Indian management. Employer put a 6-month notice in place so it nearly impossible to really look for other employment.

This was Dubai/ UAE where it’s illegal and they will imprison you for absconding from a job. Thousands languish in its prisons for just that. The Dubai police are still threatening me as my former employer lodged a case against me. I better stay out of the GCC.

Quit, took the next flight out. It was rough for 6 months, but now making 4x the pay and I’m out of the backwards guilded cage that is Dubai. No more Ramadan bullshit to deal with.
