UPDATED: Trey Gowdy has signed on to help Trump through impeachment inquiry: Report
Washington Examiner ^ | October 8, 2019 | Ellie Bufkin

Former Rep. Trey Gowdy has agreed to a request from the White House to assist President Trump as the Democrat-led impeachment inquiry moves forward.

Though initial reports claimed that Gowdy had declined an invite from the White House to participate in the president's defense, the former GOP representative of South Carolina is now on board to assist, according to Law & Crime. Gowdy was approached by the White House this week as potential legal counsel for Trump as he prepares to fight against an impeachment investigation stemming from a July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to a report from CNN. Though Gowdy is an accomplished attorney, the nature of his involvement in Trump's fight against impeachment is not immediately clear. "Confirmed, per a senior White House official, who says Trump has blessed the move," Washington Post White House reporter Josh Dawsey tweeted on Tuesday night. "Trey Gowdy is on the Trump team."

I’ve not been a fan of Gowdy becuase, though he’s really effective in questioning and talking, he’s useless to get any action.

But this role may play to his strengths rather than his weaknesses. We are in a war of words and ideas, not attempting to throw people in prison. At least, not yet.

Thank you. You are so right. He questions people and then does nothing. After all the times he questioned people no one went to jail.

I quite agree with your assessment of Gowdy except that I would observe that he was rather good at putting people in prison as well.

Maybe they can get Darrel Issa or Jason Chaffetz to join the team, too.

Hiring a lawyer for an illegitimate impeachment inquiry - is that the correct image to project? This is above my pay grade.

Don’t you think you are being unfair to Mr. Gowdy. The only power he had was to question/investigate which he did quite well. It was up to the DOJ to prosecute, blame them!

Yep, he'll be effective on TV where this will be "tried".

Apparently Trump and his legal staff and his advisors have really screwed up on this one. How could they do something this important without accessing that great database of Gowdy Knowledge and Experience that is resident here at Good Old Free Republic?

I’m scratching my head on that one.

The war is on.

No other president, GOP that is, would be like Trump.

They all, esp Bush, were cowards. They rolled over, day after day after day.

Reagan was the only one in my lifetime. Nixon, was ultimately stupid by surrounding himself with idiots.

Trump, is not stupid. He runs the country like it’s his company.

Never forget Gowdy killed the spygate infant the crib when he was a ranking congressman. I lost count of how many times he said something good in the morning but later on the same day and in plenty of time for evening news sound bites said something that stabbed us in the back.

Why do you think Gowdy left Congress?

Because he was able to effectively expose wrong-doing and nothing was done about it.

The mark of a good prosecutor, such as Gowdy, is people pay for their crimes.

He is in a position to expose even more criminal behavior, and all these cases will go before Federal judges. People like MaCabe can talk tough about not taking a plea deal, but when you are faced with 20 years Federal time, you might think differently about who belongs under the bus with you.

ANY exposure will do more to destroy the apparatus of the swamp, and the Dim party up and down the ballot.

And that is a pretty noble goal.

All we can do is watch and hope.

Former prosecutor..........and was very effective.

The title of that vs. Congressman don’t line up. He was abysmal as the latter.

Here, he can charge forward should the vote pass in the House and maybe can dig up some known dirt that would apply and he has first hand knowledge of.

“I’m scratching my head on that one.”

Keep scratching, perhaps the stimulation will break through all that snark and allow you to view things objectively. Or not, doesn’t really matter to me.

If Gowdy’s job is asking the right questions and framing the arguments, he’s excellent. He doesn’t appear to know how to charge politicians with crimes, but that will not be his role here.

Can you explain how the Trump legal team could make such a mistake?

I’m sorry but I just think Trump and his team have a much better understanding of what Gowdy will add to that team than the average or in fact any Gowdy Hating Freeper.

I suppose I could wrong about that. Maybe all you guys know something that Trump doesn’t. Time will tell on that one.
