Exactly. Those three nations fight for their own national pride and customs and are our staunchest allies.

Wonder if we can send our kids to Polish schools

Yep - my paternal grandparents came over in the late ‘20s...my Dad had a repertoire of a LOT of Polish jokes to disarm those who opted to rag him and now I’m prouder than ever of my heritage.

The reason Poland was not visa free to the US is that they had a problem with visa overstays.I don't know why, in this day of computerized everything, the govt can't enter that visa number in a database that would print out all the overstays, which would allow a judge to issue a warrant for their arrest on whatever file the police use to check people out. They would only catch those who sped or committed some minor crime, but just the fact that we kept track of 'em would surely cut into the problem.
To push the envelope, jail time would be the equivalent of their overstay.

I don’t think any other Eastern European country is on the list. Poland will be the first.

Parts of it are still very poor, but large parts are much, much better off now.

Poland is not poor at all.
Warsaw is one of the most thriving cities in Europe today.

Hey!
Some parts of Poland are a bit poorer than others but situation is changing rapidly:
1. Poland is the only European country with economy growing for 30 years straight. Even during the global financial crisis of 2008/2009. 2. McKinsey predicts Poland will become the fastest-growing EU economy for the next decade. 3. Poland is the first post-soviet country that became "developed market".
Still I think better earning options are in EU (Scandinavia, Germany, UK) rather then in US. Costs of travel and stay are rather high in the latter.
Nevertheless it is good that I finally won't have to pay additional fee (which is quite high) and go through the legislative hell (involving travelling to the embassy in Warsaw), just to visit my family in US.
