So, don’t use ice core samples.

Use the fossil remains of flora and fauna, while living, absorbed trace elements (isotopes) that can now be measured and dated accurately.

Sea floor core samples would be the better choice.

What local conditions affect them?

what is the consistency of plant remains over time and around the world?
