EPA blasts California air quality, threatens to withdraw highway funds

The Trump administration on Tuesday escalated its fight with California over environmental issues by threatening to withdraw billions of dollars in federal highway funds because of poor air quality in the state.

In a letter to California Air Resource Board chief Mary Nichols, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Andrew Wheeler said the state "has failed to carry out its most basic tasks under the Clean Air Act," and not produced timely plans to meet targets for ambient air quality goals.

The EPA said California must withdraw inactive plans that would most likely be denied. If the EPA rejects a plan, it could trigger "highway funding sanctions, which could result in a prohibition on federal transportation projects and grants in certain parts of California," Wheeler said.

California is set to receive just over $4 billion in federal highway funding in the budget year that starts Oct. 1.

California has ~15,000,000 cars.
That’s almost twice as many as the state with the next highest number. That would be Texas, which has ~8,000,000 cars and is 104,901.8 square miles bigger than California.
California has ~30,000,000 motor vehicles

Yes, California is the most populous state, but for a state that preaches environmentalism to the rest of the US, they produce a lot of CO2 and a lot of pollution.

Posting while sleepy but I'll give it a try.

The Trump Administration cancelled the authority of California to set emissions standards. I support this. But then the EPA is threatening to withhold funds because California has bad air quality. There is a seeming disconnect here.

My question to the EPA would be is if they are accusing California of not doing enough to improve air quality, or are they accusing California of using ineffective technologies to improve air quality when better are available? Note here: I am asking a question only. I am not suggesting that there are better technologies available. I hope there are and that this is where the EPA is going.

So CA has filed 29 lawsuits against the Trump administration, according to the article. That’s great. The process is the punishment. I hope CA is bleeding money from all these suits.

Illegals with unregistered cars is part of the disconnect.

Having too many illegals causes that.

“LOL! This is what the Left has always done. Time for the Left to choke on it.”

And they did it illegally and by fiat. Trump’s admin is going by the book which hopefully holds up in court. Now that the 9th circus is no longer a guaranteed win for the left, California might just want to reconsider its positions.

I don't. We are either the party of states' rights and the 10th Amendment or we aren't. California's emissions plan may be misguided and wrong-headed but it is still our right as a state.

But then the EPA is threatening to withhold funds because California has bad air quality. There is a seeming disconnect here..

I agree.

The Democrats are all for the EPA and environmental laws so they should be happy to suffer the consequences of breaking those laws.

Sorry

CA is continually EXEMPTING itself from EPA guidelines. That means they aren’t living up to the standards.

Yes, there is a states right issue. but California by default sets the standard for all states for manufactures. We are all affected by the unrealistic standards.

“We are all affected” is pretty much the crux of every leftist argument against concealed carry reciprocity. The fact that it is inconvenient for other states does not nullify the 10th Amendment. Sorry. If other states don’t like the fact that California sets the standard, they are free to try to change that.

Calif politicians have already stopped repairing the roads judging from the lack of pothole repair. They are reducing lanes as well. Known as road diets.
