Trump has stated last year that there are successors in the wings to follow him as POTUS.
I'd love to know who. Frankly I can't see any on the horizon.
Reagan apparently wanted Paul Laxalt to be his running mate but came under extreme pressure from the party establishment to pick Bush. At the time they viewed Reagan almost as suspiciously as they view Trump today.

Laxalt would have been a great choice. The only drawback I could see was that he was from a neighboring state, but then that worked out for Clinton and Gore.

You can bet that if Reagan had picked Laxalt the establishment pubbies would have revolted and decided to back John Anderson just to spite Reagan and cause him to lose to Carter.
